Master in Participatory Development

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Master in Participatory Development program aims to provide professional competence and career development to field workers and development managers from the government, non-government and private sectors.

This two year Innovative program, is especially designed for those who wish to pursue further studies in the area of community participatory development but whose dedication to their jobs, their families or their vocation prevent them from taking up masteral studies in the traditional classroom setting.

LEARNING GOAL:

The curriculum is designed to enable students develop higher level competence in the practice of Participatory Development.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After this course, students shall be able to;

1. demonstrate integrative skills in participatory situational analysis, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation;
2. design innovative strategies or approaches in community organizing, local governance, community based entrepreneurship and other development concerns;
3. perform leadership roles to advance sustainable, people centered and gender responsive development;
4. synthesize indigenous and formal knowledge using the Participatory development approaches.

MODE OF INSTRUCTION:

Classes are scheduled at most twice a month for every subject enrolled. The rest are self-directed study supplemented by field activities, assignments and examinations.

On line communication between the faculty and the students through the MPD virtual host ( internet/website) or through email is another mode of instruction. Telephone can also be a medium for instruction through teleconferencing and other electronic communications ( video or computer conferencing) when available.

MPD 101 (3 units) - Human Behavior in an Organization
Course Description: Individual & Organizational & change in the context of Participatory Development

MPD 102-A ( 2 units) - Research Methods in Participatory Development
Course Description: Research Design, Data Analysis and interpretation including technical writing with emphasis on PAR

MPD 102- B ( 1 unit) - Tools and Approaches to participatory Qualitative Research
Course Description: Research Design using tools and approaches of qualitative research

MPD 103 ( 3 units) - Statistics in Participatory Development
Course Description: Basic Statistical principles and techniques with emphasis on application to social research

MPD 111 ( 3 units) – Development Anthropology
Course Description: Origins and social relationships of human beings within the context of PD

MPD 112 ( 3 units) – Social Mobilization
Course Description: Approaches to participatory social mobilization ( with emphasis on advocacy, networking and community organizing)

MPD 113( 3 units) – Strategies of Participatory Enterprise Development and Management
Course Description: Participatory Strategies from developing and managing viable micro enterprises

MPD 114 ( 3 units) – Demography and Population Development Integration ( Demographic and Social Analysis)
Course Description: A participatory critical analysis of population size, growth, distribution and trends and their implication to socio-economic development

MPD 115 ( 6 units) – Participatory Project Development
Course Description: The application of PD principles and approaches in the project development cycle

MPD 116 ( 3 units) – Participatory Governance
Course Description: Approaches in broadening participation in governance

MPD 122 ( 3units) – Integrated approaches to participatory development ( CO-PAR and SIAD)
Course Description: An in depth study and critique of different development perspectives

MPD 123 ( 3 units) – Gender in Participatory Development
Course Description: Gender Integration to participatory development processes

MPD 124 ( 3 units) - Current Development Issues, Trends and Strategies in PD
Course Description: Updates on trends, issues and strategies in PD

Plan A: Comprehensive Oral and Written Examination
Plan B: Proposal and Thesis Writing and Defense

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Graduates with a baccalaureate degree, preferably in the field of social sciences from an accredited college or university. English proficiency (both oral and written). At least one year experience n community development work.

A: Filipino Applicants;

Applicants must submit the following:

1. Transcript of Records
2. Honorable Dismissal
3. Accomplished application form
4. ID pictures - 2 copies 1x1
5. Birth Certificate (authenticated)

B: Foreign Applicants

The foreign student applicant directly communicates with the school and complies with the school's institutional requirements which shall include the submission of the following documents for initial evaluation;

1. Completed Application Form and Personal History Statement
2. Photocopy of Transcript of Records
3. Letter of Reference from two (2) former professors

Submitted documents will be evaluated by the admission's committee after which you will be properly informed as to the status of your application. Should you be accepted DMSF will send you the following;

1. Notice of Acceptance (NOA)
2. Personal History Statement (PHS) forms for you to fill up (11 copies)

The necessary requirements e completed and returned back to the Office of the Dean including the following documents duly authenticated by the Philippine Foreign Service Post in the country of origin ( required by the DFA);

1. Official Transcript of Records
2. A notarized affidavit of Financial Support
3. A photocopy of passport pages where Name, Photo, Birth Date and Birthplace appears
4. Student's Personal History Statement
5. Police Clearance certificate issued by the National Police Authorities in the student's country of origin
6. Birth Certificate
7. Letter of Recommendations from two (2 former professor

Note: All these documents should be mailed in time for the following scheduled semesters;

* First semester class ( June) - Documents should be submitted on or before March 30.
* Second semester class ( November ) - On or before September 15.
• Summer Class - On or before January 15.
