Davao Medical School Foundation, Inc. was established in 1976 to address the health needs of the country, especially in Mindanao. Its curriculum is traditional in nature through organ-systems integration with case-based discussion. Over the years, it strives to enhance its instruction to achieve the kind of doctor the institution desires as guided by its vision, mission statements and core values.
To achieve the desired outcomes, our Dean, Dr. Petronilo A. Basa is introducing another innovation in the learning process of our students through simulation – based instruction. As gleaned from the study of Akaike’s group in 2012, this learning process hopes to provide students effective integration of basic and clinical medicine.
Among others, it will utilize a learning framework patterned after David Kolb’s theory on experiential learning that was further elaborated by Jennifer A. Moon.
It will cover core competencies in patient investigation, clinical procedures, patient management, health promotion and disease prevention, breaking bad news and difficult situations, medical informatics, legal and ethical responsibilities, critical thing and decision – making. It is expected that with the mastery of various clinical competencies, our students will be better equipped to manage patients, applying best standards in patient care and safety as they progress to clinical clerkship and practice.
